Sanjay got introduced to the world of balloons by his uncle Vishwa (the pioneer of ballooning in India) in 1974, when they built and flew the first Hot Air Balloon in India. By 1975, he took every chance to hop into the basket to try his hand at the burners. The balloon bug was deeply settled in his psyche by the time he finished school, and engineering.
Sanjay became more entwined in balloons by opening a balloon factory, and building the first special Indian shape balloon in the shape of the Taj Mahal.
Ever since that time, he always dreamed of flying balloons over the plains in Africa, a dream born from a National Geographic article in the mid 70’s.
Sanjay is an Engineer and consultant by profession, and got his pilot’s license for hot air balloons in 1990 in the UK and subsequently in The Netherlands in 1992, and in the US in 1995.
Sanjay has flown over many cities in India, Holland, and Australia, as well as in the Alps in Switzerland, the deserts and forests in India, the wine country in Australia and the US, the Savannas in Kenya, Africa, the fairy landscape of Cappadocia in Turkey and in the Arctic Circle in Lapland, Finland. He has more than 2000 hrs pilot in command and a completely accident free record in flight.
Sanjay is the Chief Pilot at Governors Balloon Safaris and is responsible for the maintenance, staffing, logistics, and marketing for the operation.
A resident of The Netherlands, Kenya, UAE and India, Sanjay speaks fluent English, Dutch and Hindi, and have a very good understanding of Spanish and German.
In Sanjay’s own words, “So here I am, finally got a chance to come and fly balloons in the most beautiful place in the world, the Masai Mara. This is the culmination of years of dreaming, scheming, and plotting, flying in the best place in the world for the best balloon company Governors Balloon Safaris. I live on the Mara River, have elephants and hippos as neighbors, and the best job in the world.”
